During a talk he gave to an audience of business leaders last year, psychologist Daniel Goleman discussed the impact of various leadership styles on teams, starting with the most positive ones—visionary and coaching styles.
Coaching, he said, is “a crucial part of leadership that’s often overlooked. You should ask yourself, ‘On my calendar, have I set aside time to meet with direct reports, not about the job but about the person? What do you want from your life, from your career, from this job? How do I help you get that?'” he suggested. “That’s the coaching aspect of the relationship management,” one of four key elements of emotional intelligence.
