
• 1973: Began insurance career in 1973, joining BL Evens & Others on Syndicate 264 at Lloyd’s.
• 1982: Became deputy underwriter, specializing in the excess of loss and energy accounts where he was supported as a market leader.
• 1984: Founded Catlin Underwriting Agencies Limited in 1984, which later became part of Catlin Group Limited.
• September 1996 to January 2002: Lloyd’s nominated director of Equitas Holdings Limited.
• 1999-present: Chairman of the Sick Children’s Trust.
• May 2000 to January 2003: Served as chairman of the Lloyd’s Market Association, the trade association representing the interests of Lloyd’s underwriters and underwriting agents.
• Served as the Catlin Group’s chief executive throughout its history and as the active underwriter of Lloyd’s Syndicate 1003 and later Syndicate 2003 until May 2003.
• 2002-2004: Member of the Council of Lloyd’s.
• January 2003 to December 2006: Member of the Lloyd’s Franchise Board.
• 2010-2011: President of the Insurance Institute of London.
• Mid-1990s to 2004: Formed long-term relationship with Western General Insurance Ltd., controlled by the Pritzker family of Chicago, serving as capital partner until 2004 IPO.
• Beginning 1999: Embarked on global expansion strategy, establishing retail offices in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Houston and New Orlean; Catlin Group Limited domiciled in Bermuda.
• 2002: Company raised private equity money to boost capacity in a post-9/11 market.
• 2006: Acquired Wellington.
• 2007: Catlin became first Lloyd’s insurer to open China office.
• 2011: Ernst & Young U.K. Entrepreneur of the Year.
• 2011: Negotiated a strategic partnership with China Re, a P/C reinsurer 85 percent owned by China’s Ministry of Finance.
• January 2015: Catlin Underwriting Agencies began managing standalone syndicate formed by China Re.
• 2009-2011: Sponsored Catlin Arctic Survey.
• Jan., 1, 2015: Began two-year term as chair of the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers.
• May 1, 2015: Assumed role of executive deputy chairman of XL Group plc upon the completion of XL’s acquisition of Catlin Group Limited.
• June 2015: Voted into the Insurance Hall of Fame for 2015.
